As a Youtube vlogger and conventional writer, I regularly receive a ton of random car questions. There are questions that are quite difficult to understand or answer simply because I don’t know everything in the motor world and I am still learning just like you guys!
Of course, most questions that I receive are based on my videos. That’s why I am doing my best to answer every comment I got to help each one of you.
However, I also receive random car questions and even non-car questions in my vlogs. So I would like to share them with you so you’ll also learn from my experience as a vlogger.
Without further ado, lets begin!
Can I use any coolant brand to top up my existing coolant in the system?
You should not mix other coolant brands with your existing coolant unless you know the exact brand the factory used in your car. Why? Because not all coolants have the same content. You shouldn’t also mix a coolant in your system with a different color. What you need to do is to flush your cooling system instead.
Can you install paddle shifters to cars without paddle shift?
Yes you can but it will be a difficult and complicated procedure. You’ll need to buy OEM parts and have them installed including the wiring system. After that, pray that your transmission’s software are interchangeable. I suggest that you buy a car that already comes with paddle shifts.
Which do you prefer – throttle controller or ECU remap?
I am not entirely against remapping though I always suggest that you shouldn’t alter your car’s stock settings. However, if you wanted to upgrade your engine’s performance (because you can’t afford a performance car) then you can go ahead and tune your car. But with today’s modern cars with powerful engines straight from the factory, you don’t need any remapping but instead get yourself a throttle controller to improve your throttle response.
How to connect the steering remote control buttons on the steering wheel?
You may install steering wheel buttons on your car if your car model has provisions for it. One thing to look for is clock spring, which handless the wiring issues when you steer your wheel left and right. So if your car has no clock spring, you better install one first.
Is there a possibility of my turbocharger going bad if I store my car for too long?
You car is designed to run and the same goes with your turbocharger. Seldom using your car will make your seals, gaskets and other components in your turbo to fail and gets damage. For more information, read this article.
Is it advisable to shake the intercooler when cleaning?
It is entirely up to you. For me, you don’t need to shake your intercooler especially if you soak the interior with either gasoline or kerosene (both of which are good to dissolve oil deposits).
Are fuel additives bad for your fuel pump?
No, it is completely safe. It will not cause any harm to your fuel pump or to your engine. Fuel additives are basically “fuel” with detergents so it can help clean your injectors and cylinders which improves the fuel efficiency of your engine.
Is it Ok to switch oil from 15W30 to 5W30?
It depends. First off, you need to identify which oil viscosity your car manufacturer recommends for your car, and stick with it when doing an oil change. Basically, oil producers give different viscosity ratings (or grade) to suit the motor’s environment such as winter time or hot summer time that is common in tropical countries. But you can use different viscosity levels as long as your engine is still fresh and has low mileage. The same goes with synthetic and non-synthetic oils.
Do I need to turn on the engine while resetting the ECU?
No. When doing a hard reset of your ECU, you can do it with the engine off and make sure the battery terminals are connected. You may read this post for your reference.
What is the best orifice size for foam cannons?
There are difference sizes available in the market and most foam cannon brands include them in their package. The best for me is 1.1mm orifice and not the smaller 0.9mm. But still decide which is the best size for your cleaning needs.
Which is better: Amsoil or Shell Rotella T6?
For my diesel engines, I love both brands as they produce best results for my cars. But if I had to pick only one, I may choose Shell Rotella T6 but of course, this doesn’t make Amsoil less better. Read my article about changing motor oil using Shell Rotella T6 here.
When should I change my transmission filter?
The common mileage that manufacturers suggest for transmission filter change is 80,000 kilometers or or about 6 to 8 years. Of course, it is best to check what your owner’s manual suggests. You may incorporate filter replacement when you do transmission fluid change.
My diesel engines have low power and sometimes stalls, what should I do?
There are many reasons why an engine suddenly becomes weak and sometimes even stalls. To start a simple diagnosis, ensure that your air intake system is not blocked or dirty. Fuel system should also be in good condition especially the injectors, pump, suction control valve and filter. For detailed information about this topic, read this post.
What should I do if my signal lights hyperflash after LED installation?
Most LED brands for signal lights aren’t compatible with your electrical system as they are low watts bulbs. They produce hyperflashing when you turn your signal lights on. To solve this issue, you need to install a resistor on each bulbs so that the excess electric current is resisted which will prevent hyperflashing.
What are the signs that I need to replace the timing chain of my engine?
There are many signs that suggests that your timing chain is due for replacement. This include ignition difficulty, engine vibration, check engine light is on, timing chain noise and engine not starting. Also, you have to check what mileage your manufacturer recommends for a timing chain replacement.
