Different Tires for Specific Vehicles!

Not all tires are created equal as there are different kinds on the market. Of course, not all tires will fit a specific vehicle, which means you must also know the available tire types for your kind of vehicle.

When choosing tires, you must know what type of tire is suitable for your ride, your typical driving habit or conditions, and of course your budget.

Common types of tires include:

  • All-season tires – tires designed for highway driving
  • Summer tires – designed for warm weather conditions
  • Winter tires – designed for wet and snow driving conditions
  • Touring tires – designed to give better handling performance
  • Rib tires – designed for high mileage road driving conditions

Of course, these tires should be paired correctly according to its vehicle specifications.

This means that a touring tire designed for SUVs or pick up trucks are not suitable for us in sedans and crossover vehicles. You can say the same for performance sports car tires which definitely won’t fit a bigger bodied sports utility vehicles.

Sedans, Minivans and Crossover Utility Vehicles

For cars, minivans and crossover utility vehicles, they all use similar types of tires. Most cars from the factory uses tires that are made for reliability and comfort, that’s why you often get all-season tires, touring or performance tires (for sports cars) when purchasing a brand new vehicle.

Don’t be confused between touring and performance tires. As mentioned above, touring tires are designed to have performance-boosting effects to improve handling and can endure higher speeds.

Performance tires on the other hand, are designed specifically towards performance. As such, they are designed to have higher speed ratings than touring tires. Plus, they are also designed for all weather condition driving as their grooves are designed to increase grip and traction especially in wet roads.

If you live in tropical countries such as myself (I live in Manila), then you most likely need summer tires for your sedan or crossover.

Summer tires are also designed to conquer both wet and dry roads as they commonly have solid contact patches, no ripping, and grooves with sufficient circumference for hydroplaning resistance.

Trucks and Sports Utility Vehicles

Larger vehicles such as trucks and SUVs need bigger tires of course. Like in sedans and minivans, all-season and performance tires are also available for SUVs and trucks, but with a slight difference in design.

When you say performance tires in SUVs and trucks, you will get either all-terrain tires or mud-terrain tires.

All-terrain tires are made with complex thread patterns which can support both on-road and off-road driving conditions. Such conditions include dirt, sand and gravel terrain. All-terrain provides more convenience and even security as you know your tires can conquer both highways and off-road terrains.

Mud-terrain tires on the other hand, are of course designed for dealing off-roading in mud or in less solid terrains such as mountains, river-crossing, rocky terrain and many others. Mud-terrain are for off-roading enthusiasts who likes to take their adventure to the next level.

This type of tires however, are not comfortable to use in normal highway conditions.
